For some reason we were trying to think of movies for the kids to watch outside the current Disney/Pixar rotation and came up with sports themed movies like 'The Mighty Ducks' and 'SpaceJam.'
We were going to get the movies at the library like we do a few times a month but we happened to be at Wal-Mart to get some assorted things we buy there (batteries and dog food are cheap) and came across a discount Blu-Ray bin and saw 'Space Jam.'
For $7 I figured why not?
Fast forward to later that movie night and I was shocked at how much the kids went bonkers over this movie.
There are a few reasons I was taken back.
First, I had never seen the movie before myself. Back when it came out I was probably watching 'Pulp Fiction' and 'Clerks' and couldn't be wasting time with a kids movie. So I was not aware at how flawlessly they integrated the live action with the cartoon and on Blu Ray it didn't look outdated at all. If it weren't for a thin Charles Barkley you'd think this movie was brand new.
Second, my children don't watch Looney Tunes, never have. They only know the characters via popular culture references and commercials so that was one more reason I was surprised by their rapt attention at the screen.
Out of all the characters they only knew Bugs Bunny by name so Mommy and Daddy were doing a bit of education through out the flick about Daffy Duck, Sylvester and all the rest.
Third, while the kids watch basketball on TV from time to time and know Michael Jordan is the best basketball player of all time, they sure don't follow the sport like they do hockey or football. But the action on the court was mostly of the cartoon variety anyway.
I got quite a few laughs myself and kept remisicing about a time when the NBA had so many superstars of the caliber of Jordan, Barkley and Ewing. How Shawn Bradley got in there I don't know…
