Every year we give out our awards at Cars.com for the best cars of the year. They cover a broad array of categories and are vetted for a number of criteria. Below are just my personal favorites of the year. They are rated for just one criteria: did I like them as a dad? Check out last year's post here.
Mini Cooper Hardtop (above)
The original hardtop got bigger this generation. Big enough to fit a kid comfortably? What do you think?
BMW 3 Series Wagon
It doesn’t have as much space for the kids in back but who cares. This is my dream car and still is after a year of driving a variety of awesome cars.
The Volvo comes close to the 3 Series and has more room in the back for the kids. Everyone knows I’m a wagon freak right?
A muscle car that can fit kids in the back…three of them in car seats actually.
A compact car with European handling and practicality. Plenty of room in the back for kids in boosters and older.
It’s fast. Fast enough where you won’t want the STI and the back seat is relatively huge for the compact class.
This one surprised me this year because of just how great it handles. It’s the closest thing to a BMW that a Japanese company has made. And I loved the S trim level’s performance adjustments and white and black color scheme.
If your wife demands a luxury SUV get the XC60 because it’s pretty darn fast for the class, costs less and has a ton of room in the cargo area.
We’ve owned two. This will likely be our third. You just can’t beat the interior room, mileage and all-wheel drive capability.
The Legacy is finally not a second-tier sedan. It gives up nothing in terms of mileage for the all-wheel drive capability and the interior and tech is finally up to par.
If you need a commuter that can also handle the kids for short rides to school the Fit …uh fits the bill.
